Christie’s Upcoming Auction Offers Hong Kong’s Finest Modern Wines

On September 18th, Christie’s will be auctioning off some of Hong Kong’s finest and rarest contemporary wines. Sourced from SK Networks, one of South Korea’s leading global enterprises, the auction will include some of the finest modern classics, including Lafite-Rothschild, Mouton-Rothschild, Latour, Margaux and Haut-Brion. Until now, SK Networks has kept the assortment of nearly 400 cases of rare wines cellared in both the United Kingdom and Bordeaux.

Over the years, the company’s professional staff has collected some of the finest bottles in accordance to SK Networks’ strict selection criteria. From the finest first growths, these wines are a connoisseur’s delight. Among the wines being auctioned are eighty crates of Châteaux Lafite-Rothschild from the years 1990 to 2006 valued at $85,000, sixty crates of Châteaux Latour from the years 1990 to 2003 valued at $45,000 and twenty crates of Châteaux Haut-Brion from the same years valued at $15,000.

Like many of the brands up for auction, Lafite has long maintained a prestigious name in the wine community, and the winery has created some of the world’s most expensive red wines. Their current record holder, which sold at $156,000, is a 1787 Châteaux Lafite previously owned by Thomas Jefferson, and while this particular purchase may seem indulgent, wines have recently become a popular financial investment. According to Wine Investment, “over a two week period from Lafite Rothschild 2008 being released, the price grew from £1500 to £3600 in the UK,” resulting in a rather impressive profit margin.

The upcoming auction will be held at the renowned Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Hong Kong, and the complete collection is expected to fetch $3.4 million dollars.
