Chateau Lafite – where the wine was produced – has one of the largest vineyards in the Medoc and provides about 35,000 cases of wine a year. Jacques de Segur cultivated the vineyard in about 1680 and it soon became known as the Kings wine by the early 18th century. It is also reported that Thomas Jefferson often bought bottles of Lafite for President George Washington. Currently, Eric de Rothchild is the president administrator.
This luxurious wine has been described as seeping out like a bouquet of flowers with black truffles, cedar, lead pencil and red fruits. It is delectable and described as medium to full bodied, velvety-textured, rich and pure, with a hint of acidity.
The bottle has a lightly stained capsule with a low shoulder fill, which is not unusual for wines 40 years of age; this simply means the wine is at the midpoint of the bottle.
